Wooden Crochet Hooks: A Collectors Dream (and Easy on the Hands!)
Crochet hooks are made in many different materials, but my favorites are wooden crochet hooks. There's just something about working on an old pattern with a hand-crafted hook, or even true vintage hooks.
Why Use Wood?
There are two reason for using crochet hooks made from wood: they feel good, and they look good.
Have you ever crocheted with a steel hook? It seems like the cold steel just saps the warmth from your hands. It feels cold and hard.
Wood, on the other hand, is warmer. Plus, they are carved and shaped in such a way that they feel good in your hands.
And because they are carved, they look great. These days, you can even get them custom made with beads (my favorite), or silver insets, and a variety of other fun looks.
Collecting Wooden Crochet Hooks
Wood hooks are fairly easy to find, but sometimes determining if they are vintage or antique is another story. There are three types of hooks you can buy today.
Collecting Wooden Crochet Hooks
Wood hooks are fairly easy to find, but sometimes determining if they are vintage or antique is another story. There are three types of hooks you can buy today.
First, there are the handcrafted wood hooks. These are hand turned, and sometimes custom made. But - a picture is worth a thousand words...see for yourself how nice these are.
I really like these designs. These are decorative and functional and are individually freehand crafted by William Schmidt. Here's his website:

For completely custom made hooks, and very cool designs, look at
Graydog Woodenware.
These are also handcrafted, and some of his listings appear in the eBay listings below.
One more handcrafted wood crochet hook - these are not as decorative, but are very nicely done (and are also in the eBay listings):

The second type is machine made wooden crochet hooks. One good supplier is Brittany. Their hooks are currently made of birch, and are available from a variety of suppliers, including
The Shy Fish.
Finally, there are the used and vintage/antique wood crochet hooks. When you are considering a collectible purchase, try and find out as much information about the hook, where the seller acquired it, what it is made of, etc. as you can. Also, be aware of shipping costs.
Of course, you can find everything on eBay. Here are their current listings for wooden crochet hooks:
