Your Complete Vintage Crochet Resource ...

Crochet is very popular right now, and vintage crochet patterns are experiencing a comeback as well.

According to Wikipedia, the word crochet is derived from the Middle French word croc or croche, meaning hook. It describes the process of creating fabric from a length of cord, yarn, or thread with a Crochet hook.

I like that - you're making fabric.

Use Vintage Crochet Patterns if ...

  • You like the antique patterns and old-fashioned designs. Personally, I like vintage designs much better than contemporary designs. They are more intricate and unique.
  • You plan on selling your creations. In most cases, you cannot use a copyrighted pattern and sell the item you make. Older patterns are perfect, because they are in the public domain. You can use them any way you like.
  • You like digital patterns. Because these patterns are in the public domain, you can use them any way you want. So, one thing I have done is digitize many of my patterns. You can use them, print them, store them on your computer, and print them again, if you wish. Many digital crochet patterns are now available for readers such as Kindle Wireless Reading Device, or can be downloaded and printed instantly - no more waiting for a pattern to arrive in the mail.

Vintage Crochet Basics

Crochet has changed over the years, and there are a few differences between some vintage patterns and modern crochet patterns.

Vintage Crochet Stitches were not standardized until 1930, so if your pattern is older than that, you will need to refer to an older stitching guide for help. If you need to learn to crochet , learn the modern stitches first, then try your hand at the vintage stitches.

One other difficulty you may run into with vintage patterns is that the original thread or hooks may no longer be available. Choosing the correct crochet hook for the thread or yarn you are using is critical to make older crochet patterns work for you.

And Here's A New Twist...

Here's where I, personally, am having fun with old crochet patterns. I take these patterns and make them in the new, fun, fuzzy yarns. For instance, take an old pattern for slippers, make it with super soft fuzzy yarn - and you've got "new" vintage slippers.
