Vintage Knitting - No Looms, Just Needles
Knitting is very popular today, with easy to use looms and fancy needles, but vintage knitting (old fashioned way - with needles) is fast becoming a lost art. My 7-year-old daughter is knitting a scarf with a loom. However, this wasn't the way it was originally done! My mother knits, but she is the only one I know who actually uses needles, and not looms. If you're looking to learn how to knit the old fashioned way, keep reading! According to the Victorian Ladies' Workbook, published in the late 1800's, "There is not one art practiced by ladies which is more deservedly popular than Knitting. It is so easy, requires so little eyesight, and is susceptible of so much ornament, that it merits the attention of every lady; and in giving instructions for acquiring it, we add, also, such admirable diagrams of the various processes, we are sure that no difficulty will be felt in executing any pattern."

Use Vintage Knitting Patterns if ...
- You like the antique patterns and old-fashioned designs. Personally, I like vintage designs much better than contemporary designs. They are more intricate and unique.
- You plan on selling your creations. In most cases, you cannot use a copyrighted pattern and sell the item you make. Older patterns are perfect, because they are in the public domain. You can use them any way you like.
- You like digital patterns.Because these patterns are in the public domain, I can use them any way I want. So, one thing I have done is digitize many of my patterns. You can use them, print them, store them on your computer, and print them again, if you wish.
Vintage Knitting Basics
Unlike crochet, knitting terms and instructions have not changed much over the years. During the
history of knitting
, stitches were added very slowly. As a result, you can use most older patterns as is.The biggest challenge with older knitting patterns is finding the right needles. As with crochet, many needles called for in the patterns are difficult to find.
