Tunisian Crochet Hooks - How to Use Them, Where to Find Them

Tunisian crochet is also called Afghan Crochet or Tricot Crochet. Tunisian crochet hooks are elongated with a stopper on the handle end. (image from Wikipedia)

Tunisian Crochet Hook

The primary difference between crochet and Tunisian crochet is that the work is never turned. The first half of a row is worked from right to left, and the second half is worked from left to right.

Tunisian crochet is also similar to knitting. After completing the starting chain, the first row is worked by inserting the hook into the chain, pulling up a loop, and inserting the hook in the next chain without working the loop off the hook. At the end of the row, there will be as many loops on the hook as there are stitches across (similar to knitting). In the second half of the row, the loops are worked off the hook.

Tunisian Hooks - The Basics

Tunisian or afghan crochet hooks have a hook like regular crochet hooks, but are longer and have a stopper on the end, similar to knitting needles.

You can also buy hooks that are hooked on both ends, called cro-hooks.

They come in all the basic materials, including aluminum, steel, and wood. See the page on Wooden Crochet Hooks for more information about why I prefer wood.
